    1. National Grid Measures Real-Time System Inertia for the First Time

National Grid Measures Real-Time System Inertia for the First Time

Until now, grid operators used estimates to measure grid stability, otherwise known as system inertia, leaving measurements suspect to margin errors. These estimates were also used to set multi-year budgets for grid infrastructure investments, energy reserve services and dictated the trading outlooks between renewable and fossil fuel energy being used by the grid. However, Project SIM has enabled the National Grid to gain real-time visibility of inertia on its systems, which are becoming increasing volatile as intermittent renewables generation claims a greater share of the UK’s energy mix.

    2. Energy Storage Sector Calls for Grid Contracts Clarity to Ignite 'Smart Power Revolution'

Energy Storage Sector Calls for Grid Contracts Clarity to Ignite 'Smart Power Revolution'

The business case for energy storage is being undermined by many uncertainties within the burgeoning sector, such as limited revenue streams and grid services contract availability, according to new research from renewable energy purchaser and supplier SmartestEnergy. The 'Making the case for battery storage' survey consulted 45 battery storage innovators exploring the barriers they face to commercialisation in the build-up to the National Grid’s first 200MW Enhanced Frequency Response (EFR) auction this week. The biggest challenges for respondents were the limited revenue streams currently available to secure the battery capacity required for the “smart power revolution”, and the length of grid services contracts available which are currently deemed too short to meet lender requirements.

REA Champions Solar and Storage With Two New Trade Bodies

The Renewable Energy Assocation (REA) has launched two new industry bodies - UK Solar and UK Energy Storage - to support the growth and integration of both sectors across the country. UK Solar will represent more than 130 of the REA's existing solar companies and has been launched by the REA in a bid to become "the trusted voice of solar power in the UK". The new industry body will sit independently to the Solar Trade Association, which announced its split from the REA last October.
