      Alstom to Outfit China's 600-MW Hainan Qiongzhong Pumped-Storage Plant

      The Hainan Pumped Storage Power Generation Co. Ltd. awarded a US$71.14 million contract to Alstom to equip China's 600-MW Hainan Qiongzhong pumped-storage hydropower plant. The project will be Hainan Province's first pumped-storage project and is expected to enter commercial operation in December 2017. Alstom will provide three 200 MW turbine units, including pump turbines, motor generators and other equipment, in addition to balance-of-plant, design, delivery and installation supervision services. The equipment will be manufactured at the company's site in Tianjin, China.

      Philippines Approves Energy Contract for 350-MW SNAP-Ifugao Hydro Complex

      The Philippines Department of Energy has approved a renewable energy service contract with SN Aboitiz Power Group for the proposed three-plant 350-MW SNAP-Ifugao hydroelectric complex in the Philippines. SNAP-Ifugao, a joint venture of SN Power of Norway and Aboitiz Power of the Philippines, is developing the 100-MW Alimit hydro plant, the 240-MW Alimit Pumped-Storage project and the 10-MW Olilicon hydro plant, all in Ilfugao Province.

      New York Power Authority to Re-license 1160-MW Pumped-Storage Hydro Facility

      The New York Power Authority filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on April 10 a notice of a plan to seek a new license for the 1,160-MW Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Project. The current license for the project expires on April 30, 2019. Concurrently with the filing of the April 10 notice of intent to seek a new license, NYPA also filed a Pre-Application Document (PAD) for that relicensing. In 2010, the Power Authority completed life extension and modernization efforts at the project (No. 2685). Each of the project’s four turbine-generators was rebuilt with most of their mechanical electrical components being replaced and repairs made to virtually all other parts. With completion of the modernization program, the four units have a generating capacity of 290 MW each.

      Plans for the 600-MW Choire Ghlais pumped-storage hydropower project have been given the go-ahead by Scottish Minister of Energy Fergus Ewing, opening the door for a plant that could eventually supply as much as 10% of the country's peak electricity demand. Developer Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) Renewables announced it had gained unanimous support for Choire Ghlais (also called "Coire Glas") from the Scottish Highland Council in November 2012 after filing an application seeking government approval in February of that year.
