    2. Germany to invest US$130B in renewable energy and efficiency

Germany to invest US$130B in renewable energy and efficiency
Germany's federally-owned KfW banking group is facilitating renewable energy and energy efficiency investments in Germany with EUR 100 billion (over $130 billion) over the next five years. Germany is the world's largest photovoltaic market and leading wind energy generator in Europe. This boost will further decrease investment risk and accelerate the country's move to renewable energy, adding to the country's attractiveness as a business location.

Vendors of Small PV Systems are Integrating Storage [Same trend for Grid Storage?]
Fast disappearing are the days that PV modules can be marketed in isolation of a host of other ancillaries. The ever present pressure on module costs and prices diverts attention to system costs and where other savings can be made. Coupled to fierce competition throughout the supply chain - offering more than just modules for residential, commercial and utility markets - is the new name in the game.

    4. Storage Can Solve Grid Overloading by Rooftop Solar

Storage Can Solve Grid Overloading by Rooftop Solar
Mr Hart, who owns EcoSouth Solar Electricity, said ... Solar systems "drop out for a few minutes" when voltages get too high, a phenomenon known as "tripping out" … Then they try to come online again and it pushes the voltage up again and it's very wearing" … The network companies say measures such as retrofits and battery storage can stop the "tripping" but can be costly.

Report: by Research and Markets - "Energy Storage Report 2011 - Insights in New Technologies"
Although while most interest in storage has focussed on grid-scale applications, there is also a large market for smaller, scale distributed storage. This includes storage at the consumer-side which could meet demand when the upstream part of the grid is offline. To illustrate the point, in 2010 grid-scale storage projects only accounted for just under a third of all storage deals.

    6. Interview: Strategic Significance of Storage

Energy storage, in theory at least, is a technology with enormous potential to change the way energy is transported, dispatched and consumed. Because the energy sector is dynamic and technologies evolve every bit as fast, I spoke about energy storage with Edwin F. Feo, the managing partner of USRG Renewable Finance, one of the country’s largest private equity firms for renewable energy, biofuels and cleantech infrastructure.

GE, Nissan explore EVs for home energy storage

On Friday, GE and Nissan signed a two-year research collaboration to speed up deployment of electric vehicles, an extension to an agreement announced last year ... The research will look at whether stored energy can automatically supply a house during peak times, when electricity rates are higher. GE and Nissan also said they will explore if solar panels can directly charge car batteries. Another area of research will model how large numbers of electric vehicles, which pull about as much power as a whole house, affects management of the grid for utilities.
