    1. Opinion: Smart Grid = Coercion; Storage = consumer choice

Opinion: Smart Grid = Coercion; Storage = consumer choice
Demand response moves costs from the utilities to the consumer. Compelling a consumer to wash clothes at night, or pay premium rates for a more a convenient time, enables the utility to spend less to accommodate peak load. But compelling a consumer to either pay more or be regularly inconvenienced is a cost to that consumer. Distributed storage can solve the peak demand problem while not making the consumer pay.

      International Battery’s Utility-Scale Li-Ion Goes After Solar
"What makes us different is that we develop and manufacture large-format prismatic lithium-ion cells using a water-based manufacturing process. We work with lithium-iron phosphate and lithium cobalt manganese, but we are chemistry agnostic -- we are not an inventor of lithium chemistries." said [former] CEO Almgren.

    5. Opinion: Storage Empowers Consumers, Smart Grid Punishes/Rewards

Opinion: Storage Empowers Consumers, Smart Grid Punishes/Rewards
[Smart Grid] Demand response does not empower anybody. It is about persuading electricity consumers to behave in a way they would prefer not to behave by imposing a system of economic rewards and punishments … The utilities should take the expense of back-up power off the backs of consumers and provide it as part of basic electricity service. This … gives consumers something of value and gives utilities a salable smart grid consumer benefit. The distributed storage units can become the information hubs of the smart grid, rather than the consumer home [with all the privacy issues].

Schneider Buys Weather Forecaster: When to Charge & Drain Storage
[weather forecasting could] estimate generation by distributed resources such as solar and wind. They're dependent on the weather also. Throw in some distributed storage. You’d know when to charge it and when to drain it to minimize cost and/or maximize efficiency. No wonder Schneider Electric has acquired Telvent … which offers global precision weather forecasting.
