      Senate confirms Clements and Christie to FERC, lengthy list of issues awaits new Commission

      For the first time in nearly two years, FERC is at full strength, with the confirmations of Mark Christie and Allison Clements bringing the agency to a full five members. With Neil Chatterjee leaving in June, the agency is set to have a Democratic majority in the near future.

      Regulations around hybrid storage and generation and rules around storage as transmission are among the main issues that the Energy Storage Association (ESA) would like to see FERC take on, Kelly Speakes-Backman, the ESA’s CEO said. The ESA would also like to see PJM capacity accreditation for storage approved, and it would like to see market design incorporate the value of flexibility, she added.

      FERC’s new DER rule to pry open big opportunities for solar, storage

      “Enabling these flexible resources to participate together as ‘virtual power plants’ in wholesale markets is a victory for enhancing grid reliability, enabling a more resilient grid and lowering costs for customers,” Kelly Speakes-Backman, CEO of the Energy Storage Association said, noting that this new rule builds on FERC order 841, which lets energy storage to compete in wholesale power.
