      National Grid has issued an energy storage solicitation for 10 MW of bulk, front-of-the-meter storage and power marketer services that maximize the value of the storage in key locations in upstate New York. The request for proposals seeks distribution rights to energy storage that enhances grid reliability and resilience and contributes to achieving the state’s distributed, zero-carbon, renewable energy and climate change goals, according to the investor-owned utility.

      Virtual Power Plant of 1,000 Homes Planned for Hawaiian Electric

      The world’s largest residential virtual power plant is planned for the Hawaiian island of O'ahu, managing the electricity from some 1,000 rooftop solar-plus-storage systems that will be installed under a four-year contract beginning in 2020. Project developers Sunrun and OATI will send the energy from the residential systems to Hawaiian Electric Company's (HECO) grid as called upon by the utility. The virtual power plant will provide peak demand shaving, on-demand reserve capacity and ancillary services.

      The developer of a $110-$120 million mixed use project in Manchester, Connecticut plans to incorporate a microgrid that taps into opportunity zone federal tax breaks. The Manchester Broad Street Parkade microgrid will include around 1 MW of solar PV,  2-3 MW of natural gas-fired combined heat and power, batteries, and a water heating loop.       Energy Storage Legislation introduced in Congress to Drive Down Costs

      Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Rep. Tina Smith (D-Minn) introduced energy storage legislation this week that calls for a $300 million initiative to build five advanced, grid-scale systems across the country. Under the Better Energy Storage Technology Act (BEST), the Department of Energy would invest $60 million a year from 2020 through 2024 to complete the projects by September 2023.
