      A new report from Greentech Media and the Energy Storage Association finds residential battery storage in the US surged in the first quarter of 2018. In total, 36 megawatt-hours of behind the meter residential storage were installed in Q1 — equaling the total amount installed in the previous three quarters combined. The vast majority of new grid connected residential battery storage — 74% — took place in just two states, California and Hawaii.

      Elon Musk set the world on its ear in 2017 when he promised Tesla could build and install a 129 megawatt-hour grid storage battery in South Australia in 100 days or less. The kicker? If Tesla failed to meet the deadline, the battery would be free. In fact, Tesla beat its own deadline. The battery got turned on in late November, weeks ahead of schedule. Now Hyundai says it intends to build and install a battery that will be 50% larger than the South Australia facility near Ulsan on the southeast coast of South Korea. It is scheduled for completion in February of next year.

      Spurred by state mandated renewable energy goals, Panasonic, Xcel Energy, and Younicos have formed a public/private partnership with the city and county to promote a microgrid centered around the Peña Station NEXT, a 382-acre transportation hub located near Denver International Airport. The Xcel Energy feeder for Peña Station NEXT already has 20% solar penetration and is expected to have 30% solar penetration by the time the microgrid project is completed in the first half of 2017.

      Alevo Plans To Start Grid Storage Battery Production In The US In June

      Norwegian battery manufacturer Alevo, founded by entrepreneur Jostein Eikeland, expects to begin production in the US in June. The factory is housed in a former Philip Morris cigarette factory with 320,000 square feet of floor space. The batteries will not be used to power electric cars or laptops, however. They are intended for use by utility companies for grid storage to balance the electrical load on the grid and story energy from wind, solar, and other renewable sources.

      France is soliciting bids from private companies to provide up to 50 megawatts of battery storage for its islands and offshore territories in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, and for Corsica in the Mediterranean Sea. More than 3,000,000 live on these islands. The [RFP’s] objective, says the French Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy, is to “deploy solar energy which is particularly adapted to island electrical systems.” Combining innovative storage technology solutions with PV, the installations will limit the consumption of electricity when demand is high, it added.

      An interdisciplinary MIT study led by the MIT Energy Initiative has led to a 332-page report entitled The Future of Solar Energy. Among its key findings are that today’s solar panels are all that is needed to supply the world with many terawatts of clean solar power by 2050 (a terawatt is equivalent to 1,000,000 megawatts). The other main point the study makes is that it will take political will to finally wean the world off of fossil fuels.
