Highly Select Renewables Trade Show For Marines
Thirteen pre-selected vendors have set up camp in a remote area that simulates a Marine Corps outpost in Afghanistan. Most of the companies are commercial suppliers of renewable energy systems. Marine leaders plan to spend millions of dollars on clean-energy technologies that will help bring down fuel costs and increase the energy self-sufficiency of deployed forces in combat zones.

    4. Analysis: Sunk costs of Hydro, Nuke, Coal, & Nat Gas Suppresses Renewables & Storage

Analysis: Sunk costs of Hydro, Nuke, Coal, & Nat Gas Suppresses Renewables & Storage
The increased cost comes from curtailment of renewable generation that occurs because thermal generators will choose to stay at a minimum level of operation even when uneconomic for them to do so at that specific time interval. That is to say the costs of turning off and turning back on are higher than the costs of operating below cost for a few hours. Because much of the electric grid is “inflexible”, this is an important area to consider for continued integration of renewables. Thus, this is one of the main reasons for consideration of storage technologies to reduce curtailment of wind and solar generation: renewables will be curtailed even before the total electrical demand becomes less than instantaneous renewable generation due to the inflexibility of the thermal power plants.

    5. Stocks: Is It Time to Buy Exide [and other battery cos.]?

Stocks: Is It Time to Buy Exide [and other battery cos.]?
Companies like Advanced Battery (ABAT), A123 (AONE), Valence (VLNC) and Ener1 (HEV) have lost from 17% to 37% of their value in five days. But even conservative battery companies like Exide Technology (XIDE) and Johnson Controls (JCI), which make conventional lead acid products, have taken a huge hit. We have to ask, are people going to stop driving their cars when their batteries burn out? Are companies going to stop using their fork-lifts?...

Report by IDC: 'Business Strategy: Distribution Optimization Coming in Waves'
"Distributed renewable generation, energy storage, and electric vehicles increase network complexity, which will be adapted to, in part, through a redesign of the centralized command and control structure. Operators will need to shift from actively monitoring all distribution network activity to handling critical exceptions while relinquishing routine decision making to automated systems," said Marcus Torchia, IDC Energy Insights research manager, Intelligent Grid Strategies.

Xcel Testing 20 x 50kW Batteries on Grid
“It allowed us to sight the battery on property at a switching station, run cable to their substation, and provide us access to their voltage transformers to get our power on and off the grid,” Xcel said. The 20 50-kilowatt battery modules combined are the size of two semi trailers and weigh almost 80 tons. They are able to store more than 7 megawatt-hours of electricity, with a charge and discharge capacity of one megawatt.
